Whilst some may see the future of Heating as an evolution towards the absurd, such as ice-heating, here at Swale Heating we believe that smart technologies are the answer to moving forward within the digital age.
Although this can be a daunting area to venture into, similar to most technological developments, the benefits of using smart thermostats and apps certainly outweigh standard systems. There are a variety of different brands that more than often provide the same service but with a different façade or price tag. At Swale Heating, it is one of our priorities to keep our customers and clients advancing forwards in the most cost-effective and informed manner.
Smart technologies, linked with IOS and Android phones, offer the homeowner control over their heating and hot water systems from anywhere in the world, providing internet access is readily available. Apps allow convenience through the setting of temperatures based on time or simply providing a boost when you’re feeling chilly. This ultimately prevents wasted energy and in turn, could save the bill payer large amounts of money. Essentially, this not only benefits the homeowner but also contributes to reducing our overall energy usage, allowing your heating to take a step towards becoming environmentally friendly.
We want you to be as informed as possible when updating your home so discover the brands of smart technologies that we offer below.
Nest Learning Thermostat
The Nest Learning Thermostat is unlike any other. Developed from a company new to the heating industry, the Nest has a smooth aesthetic, coming in black, white, copper and stainless steel. The newest feature of the Nest Thermostat is called Farsight, enabling the unit to illuminate when it senses you walking into the room. The smartest feature however, is the Nest app, allowing the user to track every day of their energy history, providing data of the most usage in a day to the least. This permits you to see where you are saving money and how you can potentially save more. The Nest Leaf will appear on the screen whenever you are saving energy and will inform you of how many you collect at the end of each month.
The Nest essentially learns your patterns as you use it, automatically creating a plan of your usage. After being in use for a week, the Nest adapts to your lifestyle, learning when you typically get up in the morning and using your phones location to detect your typical leaving times. The device also learns how long it takes your home to heat up, so that you don’t need to crank the temperature up to get warm quickly, it will simply set sooner.
There is also a quick view display which enables you to turn the ring and access your settings, energy history or set your schedules. It also tracks the weather so that it can automatically adjust to highs and lows in temperature. Smart bit of tech!
Despite the automatic feature of the Nest, the external ring enables the user to manually adjust the temperature, displaying the degrees in a bold, large font for easy viewing. The Nest Learning Thermostat is compatible with combi boilers, system and heat only boilers, domestic hot water tanks, hydronic underfloor systems, ground-source heat pumps, zoned systems and heating systems with OpenTherm technology.
Honeywell EvoHome Multi Zone and Honeywell Lyric T6 Thermostat
The Honeywell EvoHome Multi Zone is the perfect tool to fit a smart technology friendly home as it is compatible with the Amazon Alexa as well as Samsung SmartThings. The device will work with any boiler or heating system installed in your home and can even work with hot water, underfloor heating and security.
The best part however, is the zoning capabilities of the EvoHome. The radiator controllers fit on most standard TRV bodies and enable the device to change the temperature based on the usage of different zones in your home. Capable of controlling up to 12 different zones, the EvoHome can even monitor unused areas and reduce the temperature whilst heating up occupied zones. Similar to the Nest Learning Thermostat, the EvoHome can also be controlled via an app and can schedule your heating for you, without the learning capabilities.
Honeywell also offer the Lyric T6 Smart Programmable Thermostat which similarly to the Nest, has a digital screen that sits sleekly on your wall. The device similarly works with any heating system, is smart technology compatible and can be controlled via the app. However, the Lyric uses geofencing to detect how far you are away from home and sets your heating based on distance but also will reduce you energy usage whilst you are away.
Next, we have the Worcester Wave, which can also control your central heating and hot water by your smart phone. Introducing Worcester Bosch to the digital age, the Wave is also smart watch compatible, offering easy control over your home from anywhere. Similar to the Nest, the Wave has learning properties that adapts its scheduling to your specific usage and needs. This allows the app to track potential reductions in bills or energy wastage.
The Wave lacks the zoning capabilities of the Honeywell EvoHome, but uses weather conditions to use the most appropriate power settings. The Wave is also only compatible with selected Worcester Bosch boilers.
Lastly, is the Vaillant vSMART wireless Thermostat. The Vaillant vSMART also has an accompanying app and self-learning controls as well as weather adaptation based on internet data. The display is ‘e-paper’ supposedly offering a high level of readability from afar and is non-reflective.
The vSMART can either be wall mounted or free standing based on preference and is powered by the use of easily accessed AAA batteries. Like similar devices, the Vaillant vSMART also has a holiday mode, enabling the device to monitor your home and prepare for your return.
Unlike the above devices, the Vaillant offers less remote options on the device itself with purely plus and minus buttons to adjust the current temperature. The screen is black and white, offering less appeal than its aesthetic competitors and similar to Worcester, is only compatible with Vaillant boilers, and only a select range at that.
Whichever your preference, each smart thermostat can offer a variety of tools to different users. Click here to get a free online boiler estimate and select a new thermostat as an additional extra! Should you require a new thermostat only, contact our sales team today.
