Swale Heating’s Head of Installations, who started cycling only a year ago, is riding in one of the biggest cycling events in the UK to raise money for Demelza Hospice Care for Children.
James Ecclestone, from Sittingbourne, will join other riders in Prudential RideLondon in July to cover 100 miles of London’s roads and across the Surrey Downs on a route used by the world’s best cyclists in the London 2012 Olympics.
It’s a challenging ride but James says it’s for a worthy cause.
“I wanted to raise money for Demelza partly because it’s such a good local charity but also because my grandparents, Dennis and Ella Oliver, were really interested in their work and often did things for them.
Swale Heating is particularly supportive of Demelza because of the amazing work it does. We service the charity’s boilers at no charge and provides free labour for repairs and we have the Demelza logo on all our service vehicles and in our TV ads to help raise awareness, he added.
James is already in training and regularly riding with Medway Velo on Sunday mornings as well as building up his stamina through evening rides. He is also tackling time trials and hopes to complete the challenging 100 - mile route in less than six hours.
“My favourite ride is through Sittingbourne and out towards Hollingbourne; the hill there is really good training for the challenging ascents we’ll have in Prudential RideLondon.”
James is hoping people will sponsor him through his JustGiving page to help him raise at least £1,000 for the Hospice. Colleagues at Swale Heating are already supporting him through pledges.
Sales Director, Matthew Edwards, says everyone at the company is encouraged to take part in charity events.
Demelza is a fantastic charity and provides invaluable support to children with terminal and life-limiting illnesses and their families. Our staff are proud of the partnership we have with the hospice and we are delighted to support people like James who are going even further to help raise funds for them.
The Prudential RideLondon event is on 31 July 2016. To sponsor James, go to his JustGiving page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/James-Ecclestone1
