As the weather is cooling down and the evenings are becoming much shorter, it won’t be long until we need to switch on our heating systems and dig out the winter jumpers. During the winter months one of the most relied upon home appliances is the boiler and heating system. With that in mind it is important to make sure your homes heating system is ready to keep you warm this winter. At Swale Heating we have put together some handy tips to help you beat the winter rush and be prepared during even the coldest of months.
Arrange your annual boiler service
An annual boiler service is one of the easiest and most reliable ways to make sure your boiler is safe and in great condition. An engineer will go through a series of checks to test boiler safety and reliability, they will also highlight any potential or future repairs which may need undertaking. Test your central heating
Research suggests that most people switch on their homes heating during the month of October, often holding on until they need it the most. As much as this may help to save money on your homes heating bills, there is also a chance any faults and problems with the heating system will go unnoticed until it is needed. As best practice it is recommended you switch on your heating system once a month during the summer for 15 minutes. This will help to identify any potential problems and leaks giving you added reassurance ready for the big switch on.
Look out for warning signs
Keep a watchful eye for warning signs that your boiler is not working efficiently. Some of these include black stains around or on the boiler, if the flame is a different colour to blue, a pilot light that keeps going out, any strange noises coming from the boiler or if it takes longer than normal to heat up. If you spot any of these problems with your boiler contact us to arrange for one of our Gas Safe registered engineers to take a look.
Fix issues quickly
It is important to make sure you fix issues as soon as they arise to avoid any further damage to the heating system and boiler. Many people put off repairing their boilers until they are no longer working and require significant repair work or even replacing. By keeping up with your boiler repairs it will help to improve the efficiency and reliability of your boiler. At Swale Heating we know just how important it is to get your boiler back up and running, we are here 24/ 7 so you don’t wait any longer than you have to for your emergency boiler repairs.
Regularly clean your boiler
Cleaning your boiler may not be top priority on your cleaning list, however ensuring the vents aren’t blocked or obstructed with dust and debris can help improve boiler efficiency and reduce the risk of a future break down.
A powerflush is similar to a spring clean but for your heating system! Using a powerflushing unit, water is sent at a high velocity around the heating system, this removes any build-up of debris limescale and sludge. Keeping your heating system free of sludge and debris can improve heat distribution, subsequently helping to reduce home heating bills.
