More often than not, our engineers have found that many of the public are misinformed about what is fact concerning wood burners and stoves and what is fiction. To help you, we have composed a list of frequent misconceptions of wood burners and the real truth.

Our company was founded in 1972 by Kent entrepreneur Ian Pierson when he was aged just 22. After completing a commercial apprenticeship he went to work for a heating installation company in London, mainly involved with sales and marketing. This company ran into trouble and ceased trading; it was this event that encouraged Mr Pierson to start Swale Heating. He set the business up to focus on customer service – a theme that is still at the heart of our ethos.
For the next ten years, the company’s base was a small shop in Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey. At first the business revolved entirely around private “one off” customers; the emphasis then, as it is now, was on providing a top quality installation service from start to finish. After gaining the recognition from their customers the company started to grow and expanded.
Milestones on the Swale Heating Journey:
We were appointed an official British Gas Installer for the Maidstone area. At this time British Gas sub-contracted all of the heating installations that were generated from their numerous showrooms in the area. Again, because our quality of installation was so high, we became the preferred choice of installer for the area and grew substantially each year, working very closely with British Gas.
The Company expanded to Sittingbourne where a new office and showroom was opened, followed by further new offices and showrooms in Gillingham and at the Pentagon Centre in Chatham.
We were well and truly established as one of the largest installers of central heating in Kent, continuing to focus on the private sector marketplace. However, at this time, British Gas were starting to train and employ their own engineers and our supply of work from them was about to end. We therefore diversified our business, winning our first contracts in the social housing sector which at that time was expanding rapidly and where the housing stock typically had inadequate heating systems or in most cases no central heating at all.
We opened our new purpose built HQ in Sittingbourne, where we remain based today.
We started our first contract with Broomleigh Housing Association (now Affinity Sutton) - one of the largest social housing providers in the South East.
Our first TV advert was screened.
The Swale Heating group launched Direct Heating Supplies – our web trading business focussing on providing heating parts direct to consumers and small-scale installers. We also launched Heating Logic – a heating installation business based in East Anglia.
We obtained our renewable technology accreditations and started installing solar panels, air source heat pumps and other renewable technologies.
We started our London advertising campaigns and were rewarded with over 2000 installations in the first year.
We won new contracts for Orbit Housing and for the AA which allowed us to diversify our service, providing services to over 15,000 homes across the Midlands and the wider South East.
We became the principle heating services supplier for SSE’s home emergency service contracts across the Midlands and South East.
